NMGLugers, We meet again this week and if we see the same group we can follow up on several in-process repairs to software and installation. There might be a chance to "tweak" a new install to get the most appropriate software for a new user. We can look at upgrade issues for Ubuntu, and I have an 18.04 Live/Install usb to show off. I did some reading and at one place it said the Upgrade of older systems is applied at the xx.04.1 level, that is in the first numbered release after the initial release. July 1st is the time these have appeared in the past, give or take some leeway. Anybody can write to the list and add comments or issues to address at the meeting on Thursday. Thank you, Ted P.

migration to new 18.04 install

Hi GLUGERs My migration to the new 18.04 install is going great so far. I attached my cloned drive and copied over some files and hidden files for profiles, like this Thunderbird one that recreated all of my address books, contacts and calendars . Except it is the newest T-Bird version instead of the old version I had to run on my borked system. Also, since I have a Firefox account when I opened FF I only had to log in to my account and all my profile was integrated. I use the ERS verion because the vanilla version doesn't support my add-ons, like scrapbook. But I have all of my history, and add-ons automagically. So I'm pretty happy other than losing my miscellany folder but I've survived this sort of thing before. Now I just need to set up a regular backup and actually use it. I had "back in time" a while back but I don't know that it even exists anymore. I'll ck. out other apps for that. I could use a script and after I resize my linux partition I'll have plenty of room for my home directory to backup to. So this has been pretty painless. If I could restore my Miscellany directory that would be a real winner but it is nowhere, even in deleted files that I can see with testdisk. It's the only major loss. That's the saga. Brian

setting up user systems;

NMGLUgers, Hope to see some of you this Thursday. I have had a question I cannot answer: how to fix some dependencies for a Firefox ppa in Debian. Not for me, I stick with the repositories from my install as a rule, but what and how to SIMPLY sort out these issues. Would like to have a discussion on apt/sources.list and whether or not to add preferences to keep apt functioning. An aside is how to guide basic uses in a GUI to fix or avoid issues in dependencies. This last is very important if we want to share GNU/Linux or just keep it to the sophisticated user. Is it a requirement that all users be commandline savvy? I hope not. With all the development out there it seems possible to recommend Free Software systems to regular users. I am wrong? Thank you, Ted P.

NMGLugers, We may have a chance to have the "best choice" debate this week. I've been in touch with a user who needs to upgrade an older install. Not sure what he had, but we can see and perhaps solve some upgrade vs. update issues. I have been up-dating this Debian 9 laptop, but also had some fun with a mini distro, "Peppermint" which looks like Mint with a dark theme and a mash up of lxde and mint menus and themes. But it runs on an older laptop with a Celeron processor and limited ram. I did have to purge 'apt-xapian-index' to keep the CPU free. On this old machine it had quite an impact and slowed down all other functions each boot. Hope to see a few of you at the New Baking Co. on Thursday. Thank you, Ted P.

A few edits and "Latest"

Hi, NMGLugers, I have made a few edits to the Meetings page, the New Baking Co. page and posted a new notice to the "Latest" page. Jason re-named the "Latest News" to simply "Latest." I will try to add a regular monthly post to this, as there was a 2 year gap in the posts! The New Baking Company has the old logo artwork, but has commissioned the newer logo I added to our location data for them. It shows up on the Meetings page. I really wanted to get rid of the mis-direction to the Chicago bar that came up with "TBD" Quite a joke, but if we want to attract newcomers again we should think about our message. looking for new programming students for this weekend

Dear nmglugers, I need your help passing this URL on to people who might be interested in computer programming: https://sites.google.com/site/santafecoding/ Kids are preferred, of course, but grown-ups too. If any of you are interested in learning to program in Python, I have plenty of room! This weekend (April 14+15) I will be teaching another workshop. I am doing it because I had an overflow from the previous course, and many people had asked if I could do another one soon. But many of the people who requested it will not be able to make it, so we will have a small-ish course. That's OK, I will teach the weekend workshop if I have 3 students or more, but I would love to have a few more. So please pass it along!
