Dear ABQ and Santa Fe folk, Last time I asked y'all really delivered and allowed an Albuquerque kid to take my workshop. I'm teaching it again this weekend, online with Jitsi, and once again have a student who needs a laptop to use for the weekend. The first thing we do is wipe an old laptop and install a GNU/Linux distribution. Then we program in Python for the weekend. One of my students lives in ABQ (he says "close to the Taylor Ranch area" in ABQ) and does not have a laptop they can wipe, and I just found out now - too late to get someone to bring one down there. Does one of you have an old laptop (just needs 4gig of RAM) that you can let someone use for the weekend? Note that they will wipe the disk. They could come to your area to pick it up, if it's not too diametrically opposite. If so, could you please email me at mark(a)galassi.org or call me at 505-629-0759? Thank you! UNM VPN restrictions.

Does anyone know if UNM has restrictions to block VPN? Moved my son onto campus and he is not able to stay connected to our VPN system. Wondering if I will need to move the port or something else.

Trouble suspending laptop

Hi NMGLUG folks, I've been having trouble for a while with suspending my laptop. I click on Suspend, and it works sometimes. But, often, the next morning, I discover that it was not suspended, battery low or even lost power. Often, there's a message Authentication is required to suspend the system. Trunas scale exp?

Does anyone know the best hardware or software setup for TruNAS? I setup trunas a few months ago, and really like it. minus really poor performance. Which might be my hardware. The internet has just confused me more. Searching and reading speeds of Sata, SSD, and pcie is not straight. . . I am not sure where to even look to make changes for the better. Right now I have a AMD phenom II 6x with 16gig and 1 gig Ethernet. With seven Sata drives 2 of which are hot spares. My thoughts now. Are as follows. Pcie Sata card? Better nic? More ram? Bad settings? Any help would be wonderful.

Meeting?

NMGLUGers, I will try to make the virtual meeting tonight, as posted on our website, https://nmglug.org/ I have also written a new post, but it contains no new information, just current thoughts on basic OS installation for others. I get along well with Debian, and have no complaints or issues at home at this time. I keep my work simple, so the latest discussion of hardware and software for NAS was not something I could comment on. I hope some of us have an issue or idea that might spark a discussion or sharing of ideas tonight. Thank you, Ted P.
