Hi Brian, If you are able to get to a x session (GUI) I would adjust grub with grub-customizer. You can do this from command line, however, it would mean adjusting /etc/grub.d files. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install grub-customizer ; grub-customizer https://www.fosslinux.com/4300/how-to-edit-grub-bootloader-and-remove-unwan… However, I would probably would just tell grub to not display the menu. As long as you're going to manually enter the GRUB_DEFAULT option in /etc/default/grub I also forgot to tell you to run update-grub after you edit /etc/default/grub So this is what you should do. sudo cp -p -v /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub.bak sudo nano /etc/default/grub (Change GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu, with Linux 4.15.0-48 generic" ) (Make sure you include the double quotes, "") (Also add this any where in the same file, just make sure it has it's own line to itself, GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true ) (Ctrl + O then Ctrl + X to save and exit) sudo update-grub sudo systemctl reboot That should force that particular kernel to load on it's own, without a grub menu at boot time. Jessie to Stretch;

Thank you NMGLugers, Thank you members at our recent meeting, especially Geoff, for encouragement and guidance in upgrading from Jessie to Stretch on an older laptop. I had done the Jessie updates. At the meeting I changed 'sources.list' entries from jessie to stretch. The long download and longer install almost failed when we ran out of time. Geoff suggested and then insisted 'Hibernate' was my only choice. Correct. I as able to Hibernate, pull the power and with no battery resume at home. Upgrade works, but has much slower boot time. It may be the newer kernel (one online comment suggests this). In any event I will have some issues for next meeting: how to select obsolete files to remove and how to check that no old config file is holding me back. Thank you, Ted P.

I tried a bunch of fixes but found one that worked! I edited / "etc/default/grub" and manually changed the screen resolution to 1366x768. that may have worked so I shutdown (hard) and booted (after, once again, moving my user name down in the boot order in the Bios) and successfully bringing up the Grub menu. I arbitrarily picked 4.15.0-48 generic and lo and behold Wifi, sound, resolution, xrandr output shows many screen res. options and things seem to be ok, for now. I would like this kernel to be the first choice for booting. I'm sure there is a simple way to do this. can anyone enlighten me? I would really appreciate it but I can also search and I'm sure there is a solution to be found. Talk about Ghosts in the Shell!! Thanks for your indulgences! --

Weirder still

Hi All and thanks for bearing with me. In an attempt to have additional kernels besides the two shown in Grub prior, I installed several and now I have many to choose from, 4.15.* to 4.18.*, and have tried several (yes I can now access Grub at boot). I still cannot restart or shutdown (except hard). My WiFi is gone though after the first boot after adding the kernels I had it for a short session. I'm wired now. I cannot get the correct screen resolution and xrander shows only: $ xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected primary 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 76.00* this resolution is too low but the only one available it seems. Looks like this: I have tried a few things from support groups and to no avail. That's the screenshot above, BTW, not duplicate typing. Sound seems to have gone away too. I imagine all of this is really the universe saying to do a clean install. I wish I knew what had happened but I probably never will. So that's the update from hosed central. Wish I could make tonite's meeting but we're supporting Kitchen Angels. Thanks folks Brian

Weirdness

Hi All, Since I may not make meeting (niece visiting and Thurs. is her last day) I'm putting my issue out for comment and hopefully answers. As many of you know I used to updgrade instead of clean installs and did that since Ubuntu 6.04. I had also added many apps from third parties and also modified many, many conf files to keep things working. I had a meltdown and lost much of my data but following a partial recovery, thanks to a certain group member, I installed a clean version of 18.04 onto a new 1TB SSD. I have ot tinkered at all with 3rd party software nor modified any conf files or been a bad boy in any way! My issue ids that I cannot shut down my box in anyway other than a hard shutdown. I also cannot restart it. I have tried the GUI option as well as switching to text mode and using "sudo shutdown now" or "sudo restart now". In those cases I get the splash screen with the "traveling lights" and Unutu but it hangs there. The traveling dots hang on the first dot of the splash screen and nothing happens. I had hoped that text mode would give give me an indication of the issues but I can't stay in that mode for some reason. Thanks for any help. Brian --

Hi Tom, You're email only went to me, so I re-added nmglug(a)lists.nmglug.org to the To list. Since your OS is pretty fucked up, you definitely should tackle that first. When you are able to login with some form of shell, I would look at journalctl to see if anything is throwing any obvious error. To look at your kernel logs from the boot before the current boot do this: $ sudo journalctl -k -b -1 If you're not sure which -b number to use, (-1 ,-2, -3, -4, -5, etc) do this command: $ sudo journalctl --list-boots https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd/Journal https://jlk.fjfi.cvut.cz/arch/manpages/man/journalctl.1 If you have to reinstall, I would make sure to save all the commands you use to install your stuff. That way, going forward, re-OSing will be easier. If anyone has any other advice over figuring out why a particular kernel won't boot, please let us know. This has never really happened to me, so I don't have too much experience over this topic. Would be a great LUG topic. Comcast and Thunderbird Blues Reprise

It's happening again. And no, I'm not off my meds, but I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps I should be on some as this stuff is starting to make me feel really crazy. Anyone know their way around the .thunderbird directories well enough to point me toward the likely suspects? First, Comcast apparently configured our rented modem-router in such a way that imap.comcast.net failed in all instances of Thunderbird on different machines in our house. I eventually discovered and adopted the workaround of using imap.ge.xfinity.com (perfectly functional, but with invalid certificate problems, probably due to my lack of knowledge or comprehension or motivation or time to figure it all out.) Next, I purchased our own modem-router and soon discovered that with the new router imap.comcast.net works fine in all instances on different machines in our house. So I set 'em all back to imap.comcast.net recommended defaults. Smooth sailing until... Now, after a couple or three weeks of successful use, I discover that on my wife's machine that both instances of Thunderbird in separate user accounts accounts have stopped downloading emails with imap.comcast.net. Ubuntu MATE 18.04 kicks up little screen messages saying that it can't connect with imap.ge.xfinity.com--which, of course, it shouldn't now be trying to do because server settings in both accounts are configured for imap.comcast.net Where do these gremlins reside and from whence did they come? Is it witchcraft? I put it to the council: Should someone be burned at the stake or is it only a wee misunderstanding?
