Peppermint OS progress of sorts

NMGLugers, I did convert to Debian Stretch on this rather older laptop. It runs well enough and avoided some of the builtin difficulties of the Peppermint OS. But I found an old hdd, so now have installed Peppermint OS 8 again and worked to iron out some of the bugs and settings not to my liking. Browser still an issue with 70-80% of cpu consumed. Elinks, non-gui browser much better and quicker. Oddly, dvd and video play as well as one would expect on older processor. For those interested I will try to remember to bring laptop and both hdd's to the meeting on July 5th. Also a Peppermint OS Live/Install disk to pass along. The developers figured to save hdd space by relying on web applications and ICE-SSB, their use of browser to "select site browse" locking the session to one site with their app. I don't see the logic of that for older processors. It makes this unit crawl and stall. Interesting parallel with educational test sites that lock the browser so you cannot get the answer from Wikipedia. Thank you, Ted P.

"Low rider" computing;

NMGLugers, Well I got tired of the Peppermint OS being so slow on the 2004 Toshiba laptop, so I installed Debian. It turns out the browser - either Chromium or Firefox use 80% of the processor, no matter what. So, Debian is an improvement, as the Peppermint was using the browser and websearch built into the Unity system that was underneath the desktop. It was a modified Cinnamon desktop with Nemo for file manager. Anyway I will keep working or toying with it for a while. But I think the Celeron processor is just not up to current demands. Oh, well. I do have the 32-bit net install CD and it worked quite well. I did choose to stick with Xfcxe as the desktop, rather than Cinnamon, but I think that choice is a matter of taste and habit. I will try the e-links browser to see if it will fill the bill for browsing. Otherwise there is a limit to how old a computer/processor one can actually use. Thank you, Ted P.

NMGLUGERS, I plan to make the meeting this evening. Plan to bring older laptop running Peppermint os. Very slow hardware, but current software. Just for fun and a look at this distro. Brian will drop off my Ubuntu 18 stick so I'll have that in 64 bit. See you, Ted P.

Dear nmglugers, It looks like I have a nice full programming class this weekend, and I wonder if any nmglugger might want to help with the installfest that kicks the course off. If you are bored at 10am on Saturday, and want to come upstairs in the downtown public library, we can use your help for a bit: we will have a dozen kids installing GNU/Linux on laptops.

Up and running

Hello All, So all seems well with my 18.04 install except for one thing (maybe) and I'll bring that up at the meeting. But as Data said, "I am fully functional." I installed the latest Debian as a VM in VBox then upgraded it to the next version, 10 or "Buster". Never got it to full screen mode even after installing guest additions and adding to grub file for correct screen resolution. I couldn't choose resolution in Display as the default, wrong, was the only choice. I then installed the next version, 11- "Bullseye" but had the same problem. I then figured that the OS was way ahead of the repository versions of Guest Additions so I downloaded and added the newer version to the machine storage and voila! full screen mode of Debian Buster. It all seems stable enough for play time and the change log isn't too exciting. I'll show that VM at the meeting too if anyone is interested. Stayed with the two Debian repositories but can add non or semi proprietary stuff. Who knows Brian
