.7z archive apps and GrapheneOS

Greetings all, I'm really new to GrapheneOS. But after considerable study, experimentation and general poking around, it seems to me that obtaining any existing .7z archiving app, or side loading an APK for the same from any available app store that doesn't compromise my anonymity (only F-Droid and Aurora Store as far as I know)--or worse, directly hand over my identity and data to Google again by means of immediately re-chaining me to the same Play Store which I have recently worked so hard to escape--is just about impossible. At this point I'm under the impression that the only practical workarounds for the situation might be to either modify an existing APK that presently contains said unwanted tracking baggage, or compile a new one from source. I have very little relevant experience or understanding applicable to either route, but I'm beginning to think perhaps I should try to educate myself and give it a whirl. Is it all really this bleak, or am I just unaware and overlooking something simple or obvious that someone might be able and willing to enlighten me about? Tom BTW, I have two profiles in my phone setup. The privileged 'Owner' administrative profile is Google free. The second 'user' profile has the Google Play Store and all the dependencies and other Android crap that I either don't know how to or am unwilling or unable to do away with yet. I suppose I could reverse all this if it would help, but I expect it would just be letting Google back in through the back door if I allowed both profiles access to Play Store dependent apps. The way things are now, I'm apparently able to spend much less time in a Google contaminated environment. That in itself is a desirable achievement. At least this is my current understanding.

Claws Mail PGP

I have been trying to set up claws mail to be able to sign emails but can't seem to figure out how to get it to work. Any ideas? Anyone familiar with Headless Wordpress?

Hi NMGLUG folks, Is anyone familiar with Headless Wordpress? I've heard that there are advantages, but I'm having difficulty in discovering exactly what it is. >From what I've found, it seems pretty similar to what I'm already doing. Here's how I've been creating Wordpress pages and blog posts: I use the Wordpress editor, but not any WYSIWYG editor. I use the text editor, where I can put in HTML and CSS. I create a txt file filled with HTML and a bit of inline CSS on my local hard drive for each webpage or post. I paste the contents of the txt file into the Wordpress editor, and it works. Based on the Wordpress theme settings, I get the page header created for me and the nav menu. The material that I paste from the txt file goes inside the html body. So, can anybody tell me what Headless Wordpress is, its advantages and how to use it? In gratitude, LeRoy -- There is something glorious birthing within all of us. Help, please with GrapheneOS phone or VPN

Hi NMGLUG folks, There are three questions in this email. An answer to any will help. 1 AbovePhone I would like to help a friend who just bought a GrapheneOS phone from https://abovephone.com/ She doesn't know how to use it because the names of the apps are different from her old iPhone. I got her started by telling her to get apps from F-Droid (or with disclaimer, Aurora Store). Does anyone know of any basic tutorials? 2 VPN Does anyone know of any basic tutorials for using a VPN on a phone? I have CalyxVPN on my phone, but I have not yet used it cuz I basically never use my phone for surfing. I want to help people who use their phone extensively for surfing the web. 3 Teaching about LinuxOS phones I'm coming across more and more people who want me to help them to get LinuxOS phones and to learn how to use them. Guix

Howdy Has anyone run Guix? I discovered it looking for Gnu Hurd distros. There aren't many and they don't work but Guix has a linux kernel or Guix running on Hurd. I downloaded the Hurd version and got a live qcow image that I could run on Qemu but that I couldn't install. I tried repeatedly but couldn't even get the Hurd version running again. I gave up and downloaded the .iso for Guix/linux. It is now downloading many packages in a VBox VM. The .iso wouldn't finish installing with Qemu, my preference, so I bailed on that. Anyway I thought some might find it interesting and maybe someone can get the Hurd version up and running. (It ran fine the first time and I liked what I saw) --

Msatodon & Matrix Update

NM Gluggers, First of all, always great to see all the conversatin and dialogue taking place, much enjoyed. Personally, the normal time rarely works for me as I teach secondary during the day and typically have college/tertiary office hours until 7pm after. Just wanted to say hi and update folks on the Mastodon and Matrix communities I set up. The Mastodon and Matrix communities are both self-hosted in a data center up at Brown Rice, in Taos NM. I recently upgrades the server with 8 enterprise SSDs in a RAID10/zfs array, along with 4 platter drives for backups. The server has over 500 available virtual cores, over 350GB of RAM, and I have a separate SuperMicro off-site (the old one) that I use as a backup server. All data are stored on either encrypted zfs data sets behind keys on luks volumes and/or FDE volumes. Personally, I find email to be very out of date for communicating and would love to get some more of our locals to hop in the Matrix for sure, and or - if you don't already have a Mastodon - to join there too! The Matrix community is now over 20 users and although the NM Glug channel is not yet thriving, the public glug channel is very active, with developers out of state regularly chiming in on projects and helping me with some of mine. I've also removed any cumbersome barriers to sign up now, and everything should just work. tips on current home backup setups (NAS ?)

Does anyone have a nice FOSS-friendly approach to NAS (network-attached-storage) for a non-technical user? Non-technical, but willing to roll up their sleeves a bit. Simple DYI is fine, but off-the-shelf would be nicer (as long as it's based on free s/w). And any thoughts on which of the user-friendly graphical backup approaches work best with such a NAS type of thing?
