[ABQLUG] Next meetup is 10/01/19 - Ubuntu 19.10, maybe CentOS 8

Hello fellow NMGLUGers, The next scheduled ABQLUG meetup is going to be on October 1st, 2019 from 6 pm - 8 pm. I am planning on covering the Beta release of Ubuntu 19.10. Mostly I wanted to tryout ZFS on root and give my experiences with kernel updates. Supposedly the 19.10 release will have ZFS experimental support. However, from messing around with the daily image, I still haven't found that option in the installer. This makes me wonder if I take a different angle to this if I can't easily install Ubuntu over ZFS. Now that CentOS 8/Stream is out, I am contemplating messing around with CentOS instead. However, I don't know what attendees would like to see demonstrated on CentOS. If you have any suggestions, please let me know! To attned, please visit: https://www.abqlug.com/attendee/ P.S. I want to do a special event towards the end of October. I was thinking that doing a "hacktober" event would be fun and time-appropriate. However, I don't know yet what we specifically would be doing at this event. I just would like for it to be true to a "spooky theme." I initially thought that maybe hacking into cable modems would be scary and would fit into a two hour segment. However, from my testing, this isn't very good for time management since it involves brute-force and I didn't want to have to resort to using a cluster of cloud servers to process the data quick enough. Mostly I didn't want to spend a lot of $$. If you have any suggestions for the hacktober event, please let me know! I hope to see ya'll at the next meetup! ~ Jared

new programming course - anyone want to help with an install-fest on Saturday?

Dear nmglugers, On Saturday+Sunday September 28+29 I will teach another one of my programming workshops. I have often had great benefit from nmglug people showing up to help with the installfest - you see, at the start we take old laptops that the students have found and we install a GNU/Linux distribution on them. It takes about 1/2 hour to get them going, sometimes a bit more if they have weird hardware. If anyone can do that I will be delighted to treat you to breakfast/coffee (and the skinny on recent stories about free software politics) beforehand :-) And if you know anyone with students (grade 6-12) who might be interested in math/science/computing, please pass this URL on to them: https://sites.google.com/view/serious-programming/

Photoshop alternative

Lost grub, can't boot; rescue or replace via chroot?

I'm trying to save my newish installation of Debian 10 Xfce on an old 64-bit AMD Toshiba Satellite L505 laptop. The recently damaged boot routine drops to 'grub rescue >'. So far, the suggested remedies I can find for working from 'grub rescue >' have not worked out; however, I'm given to understand that alternative strategies might be more appropriate. To wit, I have both a live USB stick and a persistent installation of Debain 10 Xfce on a USB stick that (except for a great deal of data and installed software) is virtually identical to the damaged installation. I made this for occassional use on another laptop of similar vintage. It was created and runs fine on the computer with the boot problem. >From the desktop of the persistent USB, I can easily see and manipulate my HDD files. I can also see and contrast side-by-side the nearly identical files of the working system with the damaged system. (Not that it yet helps much.) My take from what I've read is that, theoretically, it ought to be pretty simple to get in there and 'chroot' into the broken installation and update or reinstall grub. The problem is that I don't have the experience to understand exactly what I'm doing or properly interpret the generic instructions I've found, so I keep falling down rabbit holes. >From the sort of error messages I've been getting, it seems that in using 'chroot' I'm having trouble understanding how to exactly acertain where I am. The prompt leads me to suspect I'm still actually working in the system on the USB stick. Beyond that, I apparently don't know how I should properly mount the partition (or partitions) I'm trying to be root in. How lvm and mbr and efi partitions do or do not interact with all this confuses me too. The installation is lvm on a single partition, I believe. Any suggestions? Tom
