Photoshop alternative
Hi NMGLUG folks, I need to do some image editing. At this moment, I have a layered image file in .psd format which a friend created in photoshop that I want to edit some layers. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. LeRoy -- I am the Love of God, no matter what. LeRoy Diener 213-LEROYIZ 213-537-6949 www.leroydiener.com/
LeRoy, try gimp, but you ma need a different file to edit. The Adobe file is private stuff, not open source. Ted P. On Mon, Sep 9, 2019, 6:49 PM LeRoy Diener <leroy@choosetherightside.com> wrote:

Just checked and GIMP handles photoshop formats. May be limited but it allows exporting as .psd so I imagine it will open them. Layers I don't know. On 9/9/19 7:30 PM, Ted Pomeroy wrote:

GIMP is the closest FOSS app to Photoshop, and I believe it can read layers from a PSD file, though very Photoshop-specific effects like adjustment layers won't work, and I don't think text layers retain their text information. Likewise for going the other way: don't expect GIMP to be able to save all its info to PSD format. Keep in mind that PSD isn't an open or well documented format, so the PSD reader/writer in GIMP is mostly just whatever some developer has been able to reverse engineer. That said, you should be able to read basic layer information. ...Akkana (who wrote a book on GIMP some years back but hasn't used PSD) LeRoy Diener writes:

By the way, although it doesn't help with the PSD task at hand, OpenRaster (.ora) is the libre standard for a minimal graphics interchange format with layers (it's basically a Gzipped TAR with the layers as PNGs and an XML explaining the layer hierarchy). -Arlo
