Dear nmglugers, I'd like to find someone who works with virtual reality. Ideally with a free software slant, but anything helps. The idea is a fund-raising opportinity for a free software endeavor. Let me know if you can think of anyone.

Hey Jared, I've got the camera and mic on my Kubuntu 18.04 laptop covered up with aluminum foil and electrical tape left over from making my tin-foil hat. But now I'm thinking I don't want the FBI or the NSA to be able to get me mixed up with someone else, so I thought I might take it off sometime and let them see what I look like. That is, if I can get this Jitsi-meet thing figured out. Not quite as scary as Zoom. NMGLugers, I see that our meeting on Thursday is posted for the public eating space "Oldery" or Second Street Brewery on Second St. Well and good for whoever made this decision, it is almost within current recommendations, providing it is open and a small group gathers. I will not attend due to my age and health. I wonder if we can also have video conference access? If not, I understand as it is distracting enough to have the noise of the pub when meeting there. We were having some increased attendance while conferencing on the Internet, but maybe that can be offered somehow and at another time or simultaneously. I do hope we remain flexible. Two issues I have been working on: remote support with the help of Jason and Geoff; and usb keys as a new edition of Ubuntu is out and I have been practicing with dd. While I still make errors, it seems dd works well and I have a variety of live and install versions: Debian 10, grml and Xubuntu 20.04 among them. I am in contact with several Linux Users who do not attend the meeting, but do need help and rescue from time to time. I will continue to offer my support with the help of the NMGLUG. Success, sort of, re Clementine iTunes Search in Debian Buster

In some respects I guess I could call this a case of "be careful what you wish for". Thanks largely to input from Mars and Akkana I was able to succeed in my goal of obtaining a build of Clementine in which the Add Podcast > iTunes Search functionality works properly. I thought all I really wanted was to get something relatively commonplace to work in the manner it should with respect to particular things I happened to have need of. But now I suspect all the failures and unintended consequences endured will eventually prove to be more valuable than my initial desired outcome. I learned a lot of things along the way. I got my head wrapped about about half-way around the apt_preferences man page and went through four iterations of attempts to build different versions of Clementine from source. The one that finally built to the point of completion was the generic current version on git hub. Apparently the developer has little interest in "the debian way". Only about half the dependencies he listed as required happened to be available from Debian repos and installed. Nevertheless, Clementine proceeded to build and do everything I currently feel a need to do with it. A bunch of the streaming services I have little or no interest in don't work. Not that that matters much in any way I can justify. But aesthetically, anything sloppy or half-complete hanging around always *bugs* me. Of course the one thing I didn't try yet was to actually completely follow through and expand onhttps://wiki.debian.org/BuildingTutorial. That is, I didn't try to build the current debian version I was trying to replace, the one with the bug, from source and see if I could actually try a little to fix it and maybe learn something worthwhile about debugging. That's a subject I know exactly zero about. So I may decide I have to continue and find out. The thing I definitely did right was to do all my experimenting on a live USB installation that I created a few weeks ago with mkusb. This was good because not only is it a really bomb-proof way of sandboxing any booby traps, vulnerabilities and non-free blobs, but the USB stick also runs on multiple machines and has a large sharable cross-platform data partition. I didn't have to dedicate any disk space and put time and effort into creating a virtual machine. (Though that would be a good way to do things too.) Also, now I'm thinking that though it lacks some convenience, I can always use any OS on a live USB stick with sharable data partition and a sound version of Clementine as a general work-around to satisfy my desires, even if I can't completely fix Clementine for my Debian laptops. But I do think if I can't ever get a Debian version of Clementine to work exactly right that I'd like to try a VM headless server and lxc/lxd/Docker container as a possible middle way. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions about any of this please let me know. Thanks, Tom

How to safely replace a Buster/stable package with a Stretch/oldstable package and maintain it?

Greetings Debianistas, Clementine audio/music player version 'clementine/bionic 1.3.1+git276-g3485bbe43+dfsg-1.1build1 amd64' used by Ubuntu 18.04 flavors works perfectly for my particular needs. However, on two older laptops for which I most value Clementine's abilities for downloading podcasts, the slightly newer/different Clementine version 'clementine/stable 1.3.1+git609-g623a53681+dfsg-1 amd64', which is supplied by the default repos for Debian 10 stable/Buster and antiX 19 (a lightweight Debian derivative), always fails with respect to the Music > Add Podcast > iTunes Search option. I currently spend about half my time living in a location where the only access to the internet I have is through occasional infrequent use of WiFi supplied by the public library (now closed and only through an office window and apparently restricted hours due to Covid 19). So I really want to be able to conveniently grab new episodes of particular podcasts using these two reliable and infrequently updated Debian machines. By way of additional context and perspective, my Android/F-Droid phone app, AntennaPod, which has an Add Podcast > iTunes Search functionality similar to Clementine, always works fine (though with more limited speed and storage capability than the laptops.) So, although I won't entirely rule it out, I don't expect the iTunes Search problem lies directly or solely with iTunes or the current anti-competitive (and perhaps understandable) machinations of Apple. It happens that Clementine version '1.3.1+git276-g3485bbe43+dfsg-1', the version provided for Ubuntu 18.04 flavors (less the .1build1 suffix), appears to be exactly the same as that listed at https://packages.debian.org/stretch/clementine as the version formerly provided by Debian for oldstable/Stretch. So, in theory it seems probable that I ought to be able to simply replace the Buster version of Clementine with the Stretch version so as to obtain the full functionality I have under Ubuntu in Debian. People usually seem to complain that the problem with Debian is the default preference for older packages, but in this case the problem seems to be exactly the other way around. General Linux and Ubuntu information I've found suggests that it is a reasonable possibility to restrict the use of certain packages to older or specific versions of software, but I've yet to locate official Debian sources that provide direct confirmation or clearly applicable instruction for my case. All the wiki.debian.org instructions seem to be geared to using the occasional newer 'sid' or 'testing' version in 'stable' installations. Of course, if I can get the Stretch version of Clementine installed in Buster, I want to do it in the safest and most maintainable way so that nothing is liable to break. Any advice or suggestions?
