I'm still stuck at the same initial part. Jason: Thanks for your detailed and extensive info. It will all be very useful, but first I need to get past some initial setup issue. When I try to start a new session, I've been using all of the default settings, which include ALSA as the Audio System, 44.1 kHz as the Sample rate, 1024 samples as the Buffer size, 2 for Periods. When I click Start, I first get a dialog box that says "Audio device not valid". When I click OK, then I got a second dialog box saying "Failed to start or connect to audio-engine. Latency calibration requires a working audio interface." In my prior email, I neglected to mention the first dialog box. I searched and found some info, such as https://discourse.ardour.org/t/ardour-install-prob/90016 but none of what I found is helping me so far. Please help. [ABQLUG] Next meetup is on December 3rd

I was hoping to be ready to give a deep dive on the topic of data drives (HDDs and SSDs). However, I was not able to complete the write-up a head of time. I might touch on that subject, but it's not going to be the main focus. Recently there have been people that have asked if I can help them switch to Linux. I would like to invite anyone that wants to switch their computers to Linux to come to these meetups. Hi NMGLUG folks, In response to Jared, thanks for your detailed info and questions. Here are answers to your questions: I am using Debian GNU/Linux 9.11 (stretch). I managed to get Kdenlive installed with help from Jason. I just installed Audacity from my repository by using the "Software" GUI. Why do you suggest .wav as a file format to import into kdenlive? My plan is mostly to edit videos which are recorded on a phone or camera. I did not find any way to record a voiceover in kdenlive. I did some successful testing using audacity and kdenlive. Here's what I did in testing: In audacity, I recorded my voice, clicked on File > Export Audio, in the Export Audio Dialog box, mp3 was the default. I selected folder and filename, and I clicked save. In kdenlive, I added a video which I had recorded on my phone and copied to my hard drive, my voiceover.mp3 and music.mp3. I dragged all 3 onto the timeline, clicked Project > Render. In the Rendering dialog box, I selected mp4, selected folder and filename, and I clicked Render to File. The successful test produced a .mp4 file which has the video, the voiceover and the music all superimposed exactly as I put them on the kdenlive timeline. It seems that I have proof of concept. In my menu section Sound & Video, Ardour5 is now added. I opened Ardour. It guided me through the setup prior to first usage. I completed that, accepting defaults. I tried to start a New Session, but I got a dialog box saying "Failed to start or connect to audio-engine. Latency calibration requires a working audio interface." I have not been able to get past that. On a positive note, I am able to use Audacity, and I'm not in a big hurry. Based on what you, Jason, wrote, I feel inclined to get Ardour working, so I can use this. While it's nice to have options, I agree that I may as well go straight to the best. I'm looking forward to getting Ardour configured/set up, so I can use this for most everything I want to do with audio recording. Here's what I'm doing now with video and audio editing. I will probably work on other projects in the future. This is just my current project. I want to offer my yoga instruction by video. So, I am recording videos of me doing specific yoga routines. Hi NMGLUG folks, I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me to move forward with installing a video editor. The rest of this email is directed to Jason. Thanks for your detailed instructions with CLI commands. With this help, I had a lot of success. Below are details. I found Kdenlive added as the only addition to the menu. I launched Kdenlive. There was an error message about Breeze. I ignored that. I think that it is only a skin. I've experimented with Kdenlive. It seems to be working OK. I will need to learn how to use it before I'll know if it's really working well or not. I found a tutorial which suggested to change the skin to Breeze. That functionality is missing for me. Nonetheless, my initial experiments with editing have been successful, I think. So, thanks again. About Ubuntu, I recognized that the link from leopoldo was for Ubuntu. I tried the CLI command there in my Debian unsuccessfully.
