Purism/Librem phone app development
I'll check it out. about 15 years ago a FOSS phone was being developed, forget the name. It was an alternative to the iPhone but FOSS and anarchistic developers. It got to a testing stage and a bunch of interested people bought the Beta version to try and test it and bring it up to speed. tiny screen, about the size of a big flip phone (open). It died on the vine as it couldn't approach the rapid development of the iPhone and the many others that came on the market. My comments are only for historical perspective and I would love such a phone to be developed. Lots of marketing and capital issues I would think. I am interested in having a discussion on app/software development on the Purism/PureOS Linux based smartphone. This is the only company I know of that has made a serious effort to actually have their design put into production. Web address:
Their phone is called a "Librem"
I'm located in ABQ but if someone wants to get serious, I'll make the trip.
Thanks.

I'd be interested in that discussion (I have several apps that would be useful on a Linux-based phone), but https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/ says "Works with 2G/3G/4G, GSM, UMTS, and LTE networks" -- does that mean it doesn't work with Verizon? Around Los Alamos and even in Santa Fe I had trouble getting a signal when I was with T-mobile, and I had to switch to a Verizon-based MVNO. As far as I can tell, that rules out the Librem as well as all the phones supported by Ubuntu Phone and Lineage. ...Akkana

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_Wireless#Network says it is LTE. I would take "works" as a promise, not a descriptor, though. Work on the baseband seems just to be beginning: https://puri.sm/posts —Arlo James Barnes

Correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm definitely not a cellphone expert, but my understanding is that LTE is data only (4G?). So the Librem would be a neat PDA, but wouldn't work as a phone (voice and SMS) over Verizon anywhere. In the major cities where there's good data coverage, it would work like a tablet, and you could probably make VOIP calls, but you wouldn't have that in most of the state. ...Akkana
