Hi; Several months ago I decided to make my ubuntu desktop lean and efficient. The main consequence: i have no audio. Pulse Audio shows only Dummy Output. I made attempt to reload program,still not audio. Speak Soothsayers and Thanks. Anthony

new "serious programming for kids" course - any old laptops?

Dear nmglugers, On February 4th and 5th I will be teaching my programming course for kids. This course requires bringing in an old computer to install GNU/Linux, and I try to keep a stash of laptops for students from poor families who cannot get hold of an old machine. People from nmglug have been really generous in finding old laptops and donating them. I have even been able to donate a couple of laptops to particularly enthusiastic students who had no computer at home. If you have one that you are sure you will never use again, please consider donating it for the course. Anything that will run ubuntu 12.04 is fine (1gig of RAM and up). And if you know kids (6th grade and up for this course) who might be interested please pass the information to them. any opinions on running a free stack on the Asus chromebook c201?

Apparently libreboot has been ported to it: https://libreboot.org/docs/hcl/c201.html and someone was asking me for opinions on using this to install debian or ubuntu. It's ARM instead of intel, so I'm guessing it's less well established.

local repo copies, and dinner?

Tonight I was hoping to pick people's brains on setting up a local full debian or fedora copy so I can apt or yum install anything from it. Has anyone done this? How much space do you need? And is there a plan for dinner after nmglug tonight?

expanding Europe's Linux Presentation Day to the US

Hello, in May 2015 Berlin's Linux user group (BeLUG) has started a new type of event which has spread quickly all over Europe: the Linux Presentation Day (LPD) 2015.1: Berlin only 2016.1 & 2016.2: 120+ cities in 15 countries 2017.1: first locations outside Europe (Canada, New Zealand, probably more) I contact you because we intend to expand the LPD beyond Europe next year. The aim of the LPD towards the general public is to provide biannual and comprehensive information events about Linux for private users who would like to get a first impression of Linux. The aim towards the media is to make the event so big (both nationally and internationally) that the nationwide non-IT media cover it regularly. The aim towards the Linux community is that an LPD event can be so small and easy to organize (even without costs) that really everyone can try to organize an event with good chances of success. The local organizers decide on their own what their event shall be like; we just make suggestions and offer support. Dear glugers, There is a documentary that has been rolled out slowly in the last year: "Code: Debugging the Gender Gap". It looks in to the problem of so few women going into computer science. The trailer is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VVb6M8pTvE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zolhgjOX27A Among other people interviewd, former Santa Fe Institute hacker Adam Messinger (now CTO at Twitter) is one of the people interviewed on the sad situation of women in software engineering. I have been hoping to arrange a screening in Santa Fe for some time, and they are finally going unlimited. Anyone have thoughts/ideas on what's the best way to screen this and how to get software-engineering/IT workers and managers to come see it? I am also interested in seeing if parents of girls might be motivated to think of their daughters for programming courses and not just their sons. I wonder if viewing the documentary might help.

First, what happened to the Los Alamos Computers (LAC Linux) site? It redirects to Lenovo now. Also the phone numbers listed for it seem not to work. Second, a company will try to recreate the currently-defunct Baking Company, where the GLUG met for the first ten years. http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_news/changes-afoot-at-coronado-… After they open (little word as to when), should we try to resurrect the free software public-access computer? another programming course this weekend -- laptops? help with installfest?

Dear nmglugers, This weekend I will again teach my "serious programming for kids" course. 10am Saturday at Warehouse 21. Info at https://sites.google.com/site/santafecoding/ My stash of laptops which I loan to kids from needy families is dwindling -- some are just too old for current distros, others are having hardware failures -- might anyone be getting rid of old laptops? Anything with 1gig RAM will work. Also: at this time it looks like a small group (due to likely dropout of someone who said she would bring several students), so I might not need help with the installfest at 10am Saturday. But if I should get a final surge in participants, might anyone be available at 10am Saturday for an hour or so? To help shepherd kids through installing a GNU/Linux distro on the random hardware they bring in. I'm planning on coming by nmglug this evening for a bit; see you then!

For example, you could make a php file on your own server called ‘weatherimage.php’ and its code would be something like: $remoteImage = "http://www.example.com/gifs/logo.gif"; $imginfo = getimagesize($remoteImage); header ("Content-type: $imginfo['mime']"); readfile($remoteImage); And then just <img src=“/weatherimage.php”> in your HTML.
