mint 20 shutting down

I have a new, clean, Mint 20 install which is shutting down after long periods of non-use... like 6-10 hours. I have tried many things to disable this. I have peeked at logs, but nothing is jumping out at me. How can I find out why the machine is shutting down? Sure, a wake-on-lan/ssh would be fine for this machine, but I'll worry about that after I can figure out how to keep it up. best laptop for under $400 these days?

Dear nmglug, We will be giving our summer interns a $400 stipend to get a computer. Last year y'all sent me to the Asus VivoBook Ryzen 3 at this link: https://www.walmart.com/ip/ASUS-VivoBook-F412-14-FHD-AMD-Ryzen-3-3250U-AMD-… and it worked out wonderfully for our students. With a year passing, does anyone know if there's another contender in the < $400 space now?

April 28th at 5:30pm, MDT, till about 7pm. We recently exploded my ignorance of the politics at the Free Software Foundation. I did re-view the video on the "State of Free Software" and found the overall tone to be negative. There were several "Thou shalt not ..." recommendations, not commandments, but mainly what not to do. I can see this as an impediment to progress, and fun, at this point in time with the multitude of hardware and software combinations out there. On the other hand The Linux Foundation is also moving ahead: The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today announced the first round of keynote speakers taking the stage at Open Source Summit North America, June 21-24, in Austin, TX and virtually. To Register: https://events.linuxfoundation.org/open-source-summit-north-america/registe… The preliminaries are posted and the actual event is very nearby, so maybe some of our locals will be interested. Much of this is specialized, but it all seems more creative and positive, at least in the announcement blurbs. I have been working on a 2010 Mac Pro Tower, proprietary hardware, highly tweaked in manufacture, but running Xubuntu tolerably. It is like a modification of a Mac Truck to do family driving: over elaborate and over powered. I note that newer machines are lighter and faster. The absence of hyper-threading is compensated by over-clocking the multiple cores. They are kept cool by one or two of the six fans in the box. It works, but is it efficient or necessary? Perhaps you are making progress on more interesting combinations of hardware and software. Thank you, Ted P

"Oldery" to close

Today's "New Mexican" reports that the Second Street Brewery location on Second St. is slated to close by April 9th of this year. The Rufina St. and Railyard locations will continue in operation and tap beer to be brewed in a new location. This means we have one less option for in-person meetings, but can still use the other locations if we choose. We may want to consider in-person meeting as long as the next Covid surge/wave is not any worse than previous ones and there are no new restrictions either recommended or required. By the way, I am now on a desktop unit with an older install of LinuxMint, previously housed in a laptop donated to Mark Galassi for his next coding class for youth. It is running well and I have switched to an internal pci card for the wifi and can reach the local Senior Center for access. I still support a few seniors in their computing efforts. Another item was LibrePlanet, virtual for 2022. I attended a few of the talks and failed to utilize the virtual meet-up space with proximity chats via video. I did use that technology in an origami gathering, but did not want to push my participation at LibrePlanet. Hope all are well, Ted P
