Greetings SDC Beekeepers, The August monthly SDC Beekeepers meeting will be held starting at 6:30 PM on August 24th at the Unitarian Universalist Church located at 107 W. Barcelona Rd, Santa Fe. Due to our growing size, the meeting location at the church has moved from the library to the larger meeting room. At this point in the season, and especially with the lack of rain this summer, we all need to have a fall hive management plan, which we can discuss. We invite you to come share your beekeeping experiences, triumphs and tribulations, and Kate will be here to answer any questions you may have about your hives or beekeeping in general. NMBKA Summer Conference 8/19/23 – Final Invite + Info for Attendees

New Mexico Beekeepers Association 2023 Summer Conference There is still time to register for our in-person summer conference this Saturday, August 19. https://nmbeekeepers.org/conference <https://nmbeekeepers.org/conference> The day will begin with a workshop held at Albuquerque’s Open Space Visitor Center (OSVC) located at 6500 Coors Blvd NW. The eight hives from our Certified Beekeeping training program will be utilized for the following four ongoing demonstrations: Station #1 “Reading Langstroth Comb” Led by Craig Noorlander Station #2 “Testing for Varroa Sensitive Hygiene” led by Corey Stevens Station #3 “Mite Testing” Led by Dr. Jose Villa and Melanie Kirby Station #4 “Reading Top Bar Comb” Led by Kate Whealen The workshops will begin at approximately 9:00 AM. We suggest arriving around 8:30 to sign in and traverse the half mile trek to the hives. As parking at OSVC is somewhat limited, we also suggest carpooling wherever possible. Attendees with mobility issues can hitch a ride with one of our volunteer “valets”. Participants in the workshops should bring protective equipment of their choosing but must, at a minimum, wear a veil. Following the workshop, we will be sponsoring a food truck at OSVC so that attendees can grab lunch, if desired, before heading to the South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway Blvd SE) for the afternoon session that starts at 12:30. The talks will take place as follows: 12:30 Kyle Swimmer, “The Laguna Pueblo Apiary and YAKANAL” 1:40 Lara Lovell and Wes Brittenham “Los Poblanos - The Bee Program & Plants for Bees and Other Pollinators” 2:50 Dr. Jose Villa, “Attempting the Everest of Beekeeping: Managing Colonies and Varroa Mites Without Slipping” 4:00 Cory Stevens “The Advantages of Virgin Queens” Free raffle tickets will be handed out to all afternoon session attendees with door prizes given out between each speaker. There will also be a vendor show, during the SBCC portion of the conference, beginning around 11:30, and running through the entire afternoon. Vendors will be bringing hives of various types, hive products, bee themed ceramics, and beekeeping equipment, as well as providing information on New Mexico native plants. We will end the day with a honey tasting table! All attendees are invited to bring a small jar to share with our fellow New Mexico Beekeepers. One last item! Fwd: URGENT! Aerial pesticide spraying threatens pollinators & Rio Chama ecosystem

The plan entails the use of aircraft for aerial application of 782 gallons of carbaryl over an approximately 40 square mile area. It is intended to control native grasshopper and cricket populations to benefit grazing operations in the area. > > The project area overlaps with a substantial portion of the Rio Chama Wilderness Study Area, is contiguous with the northern boundary of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness, is only about a mile away from the Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River corridor, and is nearer yet to numerous tributaries to the Rio Chama. > > The area is home to pollinators critical to ecosystems and our food supply chain, numerous fish and wildlife species, and an array of other ecological, cultural, and recreational resources. > > This precious ecosystem would suffer grave harm should APHIS's plan go forward. > > Indiscriminate aerial spraying of carbaryl would heavily impact pollinators and wildlife in the area – the EPA has determined that this pesticide is highly toxic to insects, including native bees, honeybees, and aquatic insects; slightly to highly toxic to fish; highly to very highly toxic to most aquatic crustaceans; moderately toxic to mammals; moderately to highly toxic to several terrestrial arthropod predators; and slightly to highly toxic to larval amphibians. Greetings SDC Beekeepers, The June monthly SDC Beekeepers meeting will be held starting at 6:30 PM tonight June 22th at the Unitarian Universalist Church located at 107 W. Barcelona Rd, Santa Fe, in the library. We plan to discuss summer management of our hives including both feeding during a “dearth”, and ways to provide a source of water for your bees, which they bring back to the hive to create, among other things, a “swamp cooler” effect to keep the hive cooler in the heat of summer. One of our members has suggested that we share pics of the water sources for our bees, whether it be a natural source or a dish with rocks, or a poultry feeder.
