Hello SDC members, We will be having our second SDC Beekeepers meeting of the 2025 season tonight Thursday, April 24, starting at 6:30 PM This month’s agenda: • Spring Hive Management • How to split a strong hive, creating two hives from one. • We will spend a portion of the time in smaller discussion groups, one for top bar beekeepers and one for Langstroth beekeepers • Questions and answers of course Our monthly meetings are held at St John’s Methodist Church located at 1200 Old Pecos Trail…..in the Choir Room. Swarming Bees - Urgent

Hi, First-year beekeeper here, and just a few hours ago I found my hive swarming, and they’ve settled in a nearby tree. From what I’ve read, I can attempt to capture this swarm in a nuc box, leave them overnight, and introduce them into a new broodbox and keep them. I’m not 100% sure though, and don’t know where to get a broodbox in such short notice. Any advice/knowledge where to pick one up, and how long I have to do this? Thank you

Hiving help requested when the Zia Queen Bee Package

Arrives probably on the 27th. This will be my first year. The hive I have is a Langstroth. A brief visit to help me decide where to place the hive would be beneficial to the bees and myself. Unfortunately I am somewhat homebound because of long term health challenges. I signed up at Hives for Heros, but have not heard from them. It is strange that everyone needs to be a hero these days. I don't feel like a hero but I volunteered for the Army in 1966, served three years, and I identify as a Vietnam-era Veteran Against the War. Best regards, John

Early swarms reported

I’ve had three swarms reported by beekeepers of their own bees, one off Rodeo Rd/Jaguar area, one in south Capitol today, and one in the Pojoaque Valley yesterday. With the recent cold weather if the bees get cooped up for a while they often feel crowded and swarm once the warm weather returns. Be sure to keep eye on your colonies now that things are blooming.
