Her bands have included the Geraldine Fibbers, Evangelista, Red-Headed Stranger (w/ Willie Nelson), Scarnella (w/ Nels Cline), Ethyl Meatplow, as well as numerous other projects with noted musicians and albums released under her own name. She is the director, creator and main musician of the 5 editions of her Avant-series “Eyes For Ears” (starting in the year 2000), notably Sponsored by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Krems Council of artists at the Donaufestival in Austria (2011). She has twice led performances at All Tomorrow’s Parties. She sang Bertolt Brecht with the London Sinfonietta at The Royal Festival Hall in London on Patti Smith’s Meltdown. She was granted a prestigious residency at Montalvo Center for the Arts as a composer. She has performed at a multitude of uniquely different events in the last 5 years all over Europe and the United States. For this concert, Carla is appearing with John Eichenseer (a.k.a. JHNO) as a duo of vocals, violin and electric guitar. Her newest album with Evangelista, In Animal Tongue, is to be released in September on the Constellation label. He has worked with Carla Bozulich, Bjork, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, and Laurie Anderson. John’s website is called Delicate Ear: http://delicateear.com/ *VENUS BOGARDUS * Venus Bogardus is a Trans-Atlantic post-punk band formed in England and relocated to the Santa Fe, NM area, playing national shows and UK shows on return visits. The band is inspired by "no-wave-new wave", and experimental literature. Founding members James Reich (vocals, guitar) and Hannah Levbarg (vocals, bass guitar) met in 2002 as fans of Richard Hell’s writing and music, fell in love, opened (and closed) a nationally acclaimed independent bookshop in Bath, England before collaborating on Venus Bogardus in 2005. James is a published author and poet. Hannah, originally from Texas, is Richard Hell’s Web forum moderator (since 2003). The couple is fictionalized in the book Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. In 2007 Venus Bogardus was chosen as one of the six best emerging bands in Britain by Glastonbury Festival and a panel of judges and critics from Q Magazine and BBC Radio 1. They also played a headline set at Ladyfest Bristol and headlined Frankfurt’s New Glam Underground Festival. Wire magazine selected a demo version of the title track for 2007’s Motorman for its compilation CD in March of that year. http://www.venusbogardus.com/ *The PROXEMICS* Founded in early 2009, The Proxemics are an autonomous music project with a revolving cast of musicians led by lynch pin and frontman Alex Neville (The brilliant Dullards, A. Barnhouse, Audible Whispering 1/2 Quartet). The Proxemics are a stripped down assembly, sometimes appearing as a garage-based, dirty wall of sound, sometimes as deconstructed balladeers offering you their hearts on their sleeves. Neville unites crunchy, angular alt-rock with a singer-songwriter sensibility while never letting go of his experimental roots. Mimicking the definition of their moniker, The Proxemics are at times both distant and intimate, treating their audience to an emotional tug-of-war. The songs appear effortless on the surface, but upon deeper investigation they become a complex system of asymmetrical forms with sonic threads and noise, weaving songs into a larger, continuous theme. The shifting members of The Proxemics are often long-time members of the High Mayhem Emerging Arts Collective, also based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, which has helped shape the City Different’s unique underground scene for the last ten years. Listening to Cloacas is like travelling sideways in time. This (mostly) instrumental Santa Fe band invokes elements of classic Americana and classical, as well as whatever their acoustical instruments inspire. With song titles like “Venetian Blind Man”, “Hot Hamburger Pizza” and “Knuckle Butter”, they present a humorous but sincere irony that is at times bitter-sweet and melancholic, and at others gangly-legged and goofy. They have been described as a tiny mountain orchestra in a wooden box with rusty hinges. Cloacas are: Johnny “Johnny Bell” Bell: banjo and ukelele Sabrina Griffith: violin, viola, vocals and kazoo Damon Griffith: mandolin, fret-less Mandolin, vocals, sit-box and Horn of Enough Michael “Smitty” Smith: percussion, vocals, saw and xylophone Grannia Griffith: vocals and saw

Guadalupe, Santa Fe Corazón, Southwest Roots Music & T-Cubed present the Thirsty Ear Festival<http://www.thirstyearfestival.com/> Kickoff Party *Times New Viking* Contrary to popular belief, the members of Times New Viking are not art school dropouts, they’re art school graduates; and instead of following the path of stuffy galleries and regular unemployment, they chose to start a band. Times New Viking, consisting of Beth Murphy on keyboards/vocals, Adam Elliott on drums/vocals, and Jared Phillips on guitar, began inconspicuously in 2003, when it was particularly out of vogue to do it yourself. Those initial demos of messy, noise-crusted, indie rock recordings were merely practice tapes of late-night house parties. Those tapes were lovingly lo-fi, tapping into the gnarled aesthetics of Columbus’ old guard and reflecting the influence of legendary Ohio bands like Guided by Voices, the Breeders, and Pere Ubu. Frequently playing out, Times New Viking soon got too big for the living room, and eventually those tapes dropped into the hands of Philadelphia’s Tom Lax. The cacophony Lax found was enough to coax him out of retirement, lifting the mothballs from his dormant Siltbreeze imprint to release the band’s debut album, Dig Yourself, in 2005. By the time Present the Paisley Reich arrived in 2007, it was easy to see that the jitters and foibles of being a rookie band had been shed, and Times New Viking were increasingly confident in their songwriting. Phillips’ guitar-playing became an electrifying spectacle in the live setting; Murphy’s synth bleats and cooing innocence a magnet for collector scum; and Elliott’s lyrics, about love and war and romantic nihilism, stronger in their call to arms for a disaffected youth culture. Vijay Iyer & Greg Osby with iNK oN pAPER* * * *Sunday, May 15 at 7pm* *O’Shaugnessy Performance Space-Santa Fe University of Art and Design* 1600 Saint Michael's Drive, Santa Fe Born in Karachi, Pakistan, guitarist/composer Rez Abbasi moved to California at the age of four. He was educated at the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical music, as well as in India under the guidance of master percussionist, Ustad Alla Rakha. Living in NYC for the past 18 years, he has performed worldwide with artists as varied as Ruth Brown, Peter Erskine, Dave Douglas and Pandit Kadri Gopalnath. He is musical director and producer for Indian/Canadian vocalist, Kiran Ahluwalia and plays an integral role in Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Indo-Pak Coalition and Kinsmen groups. The Invocation Quintet will perform The Motherland Suite which draws upon influences from the Pakistani Qawwali musical form— a genre popularized by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The Quintet features Greg Osby, alto saxophone; Vijay Iyer, piano; Johannes Weidenmueller, bass; and Dan Weiss, drums. * iNK oN pAPER a drum, bass, and electronics duo which Signal to Noise Magazine described as sounding “… as if drum ‘n’ bass took a detour through an electro-acoustic free-punk Jucifer and had its downbeats addled or partly removed.” Comprising Milton Villarrubia III (drums and laptop) and Carlos Santistevan (bass and electonics) using live samples, midi triggers, live processing and looping, the two perform as a duo in order to explore the possibilities of their respective instruments. Nicole Mitchell has been called “the most important jazz flutist of her generation.” She is the founder of the critically-acclaimed Black Earth Ensemble, the Black Earth Strings, the Ice Crystal Quartet, and Sonic Projections, and was awarded 2010 Jazz Flutist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. She is a former president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago. Anthony Davis has always been known as both a pianist with profound improvisational capabilities (he has performed extensively with Wadada Leo Smith, James Newton, Abdul Wadoud, and Anthony Braxton) as well as a composer of operatic, symphonic, choral, and chamber works having composed five operas including X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X (libretto by Thulani Davis) in 1986. A graduate of Yale University, Davis is currently a professor of music at the University of California, San Diego.
