Pulling from the influences of the blues, outlaw country, roots rock, early American folk, Gypsy and Eastern European music, Brown Bird offers harmonized voices, haunting lyrics and diverse rhythm and instrumentation, which surges in waves that often swell into high-spirited, foot-stomping madness. Brown Bird began in 2003, and has since toured extensively, including a European stint supporting RI-based band The Low Anthem. This is their first appearance in New Mexico. www.brownbird.net Listening to Cloacas is like traveling sideways in time. This ensemble invokes elements of folk, classic Americana, classical, and American gothic styles as well as whatever their acoustic instruments inspire. After making music together as a rhythm section in numerous creative projects for 12 years, Carlos and Milton are now honing their craft in a duo setting exploring the vast possibilities of their respective instruments. They have shared the stage with Roscoe Mitchell, Myra Melford, the Dub Trio and have been featured at the Outpost Creative Soundspace Festival and many other such events. * SMOKIN' BACHI TAIKO* Smokin' Bachi Taiko is a nonprofit organization with the mission to promote the art and culture of Japanese drumming and drum making, through classes, concerts, and workshops with masters, including Art Lee and his group Tokara, Grammy winner Koji Nakamura, Kenny Endo and Taiko Project. They perform the Post WWII type of taiko called Kumi-Daiko. This is a break from traditional taiko and it is performed as an ensemble. SBT will perform their arrangements of Japanese festival music. * JEFF SUSSMANN* Jeff has played or recorded with a wide range of artists, including Michael Stearns, ThaMuseMeant, Krishna Das, Ottmar Liebert, Tulku and the Zozobra Orchestra. He is co-founder of The Drum is the Voice of the Trees, and has studied with Paul Wertico and Christopher Shultis (Univ. of New Mexico). For this performance, he will be exploring the possibilities of multiple foot sounds, in both acoustic and electronic settings, otherwise known as The Pedal Project. *DAVE WAYNE* Largely self-taught, Dave is currently one-third of the jazz piano trio 'Now Playing,' with Robert Muller and Ben Wright. His other recent musical endeavors include composing for, and drumming in, The Things That Are Heard. He has played drums with a wide variety of New Mexico artists, including Venus Bogardus, Zimbabwe Nkenya, The Gagan Brothers, Peter Breslin, Bichos, Protuberance, and Bing. Her bands have included the Geraldine Fibbers, Evangelista, Red-Headed Stranger (w/ Willie Nelson), Scarnella (w/ Nels Cline), Ethyl Meatplow, as well as numerous other projects with noted musicians and albums released under her own name. The band is inspired by "no-wave-new wave", and experimental literature. Founding members James Reich (vocals, guitar) and Hannah Levbarg (vocals, bass guitar) met in 2002 as fans of Richard Hell’s writing and music, fell in love, opened (and closed) a nationally acclaimed independent bookshop in Bath, England before collaborating on Venus Bogardus in 2005. James is a published author and poet. Hannah, originally from Texas, is Richard Hell’s Web forum moderator (since 2003). Barnhouse, Audible Whispering 1/2 Quartet). The Proxemics are a stripped down assembly, sometimes appearing as a garage-based, dirty wall of sound, sometimes as deconstructed balladeers offering you their hearts on their sleeves. Neville unites crunchy, angular alt-rock with a singer-songwriter sensibility while never letting go of his experimental roots. Mimicking the definition of their moniker, The Proxemics are at times both distant and intimate, treating their audience to an emotional tug-of-war. He has released a handful of albums in the past decade on Hush Records. His last full-length was A Bird in the Opera House. He is releasing a new album this spring featuring all new songs he wrote and produced, with vocals from ten different female singers.
