An evening featuring 3 modern composers: Andrew Weathers (Oakland), Jeremy
Bleich (Santa Fe), Mark Weaver (Albuquerque).
This is the fifth in a series of chamber music concerts that started in
2009 as a house concert series. It has since moved in larger venues like
High Mayhem. Its primary goal is to provide new acoustic works from living
composers in an intimate setting without sound reinforcement, giving the
listener the experience of hearing the instruments up close in a small
space.
Russell Scharf – flugelhorn; Josh Yellon – tenor sax (from Los Lunas via
Berlin, Cleveland); Christian Pincock – valve trombone; Paul Bossert –
tenor trombone; Mark Weaver – Tuba
They will debut Jeremy Bleich’s quintet “Suite for Brass: six short pieces
for quintet” and a piece by Mark Weaver “Gelon of Syracuse” for quintet.
Andrew Weathers
Andrew Weathers is a young American composer and improviser originally from
Chapel Hill, NC currently based in Oakland, CA. His music exists in a space
between improvisation and composition – equally influenced by the 20th
century American minimalists and underground noise. He has a BM in Music
Composition from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, and is
currently pursuing an MFA in Electronic Music at Mills College.
Andrew performs rigorously in a variety of contexts, both composed and
improvised. In addition to solo performances, he heads up the Andrew
Weathers Ensemble. He also performs and records regularly with Kirtan
Choir, Weathers/Glover, Tethers, and Parties. In the past, he has performed
with Acid of All Ruins, Bicameral Mind, Northern Valentine, Tatsuya
Nakatani, Laurent Estoppey, and Hal McGee, among others.
In addition to his busy performing schedule, Weathers helps run Full
Spectrum Records, a label dedicated to releasing works by young musicians
in unique forms and limited editions.

Around this time last
year<http://nofearofpop.net/2011/05/premiere-pillars-and-tongues-the-making-grac…>
Chicago’s
*Pillars and Tongues* enchanted us with their superb album *The Pass and
Crossings* on Empty Cellar
Records<http://www.endlessnest.com/store/index.php#ptpc>,
a stunning blend of slow-burning neo folk and melancholic, blue-eyed and
cloud-gazing yet earthbound psychedelia.
The band has headed off on an extensive late spring/early summer tour
through the States. To mark the occasion, Pillars and Tongues have just
released a free digital single, a re-recorded and alternate version of
“(Laid) Palms to Tell”, which had already been a standout on *The Pass and
Crossings* and that will be featured on a limited tour release. The free
digital single “(Laid) Palms to Tell” and two other tracks are available at
http://pillarsandtongues.bandcamp.com/album/laid-palms-to-tell.
*Extremadura* is Jeremy Barnes of Neutral Milk Hotel and A Hawk and A
Hacksaw fame perfroms solo
*Black Iron Trio* is the newest project formed by New Orleans
percussionist, Milton Villarrubia, III.This trio features J.A. “Dino” Deane
(Lapsteel dulcimer and electronics), Carlos Santistevan (acoustic upright
bass), and Milton Villarrubia, III (drum kit with effects). Using
improvisation as a vehicle for their pieces, the trio explores the dynamics
of music by combining the completely acoustic upright bass with two low
volume amplified instruments that are then processed through effects boxes.
At times mellow and blue and other times thick and ferocious grinding rules
the sonic sheets of sound, always with a focus on maintaining the dynamics
of the music to allow the listener to always feel the intimacy of the
upright bass. By combining ukelele, dulcimer, bass and drums in this
environment, Black Iron Trio is creating a new form of electro-acoustic
folk music at its best.
Deane and Santistevan have played together in numerous projects including: Out
of Context <http://highmayhem.org/artists/music/out-of-context>(w/ Deane
as conductor), The Late Severa
Wires<http://highmayhem.org/artists/music/late-severa-wires>
, and Taiji Pole. Villarrubia and Santistevan have been playing music
together since 1999 and have been cohorts in numerous projects that have
ranged from fictitious avant-garde talk show house band to their
raucous-teenage-duo iNK oN
pAPER.<http://highmayhem.org/artists/music/ink-on-paper>
