Due to the pandemic we should now meet virtually! Lets try out jitsi's service here -> https://meet.jit.si/nmglug and or course IRC -> irc.freenode.net channel #nmglug (where samnob hangs out for months alone.. We can throw him a surprise visit tonight!) Jason

Probably too late for tonight, but do you have a cellphone headset? My laptop doesn't have a working mic yet (supposedly it'll work in the next Ubuntu release) but the headset that came with my Samsung phone seems to work. ...Akkana Brian O'Keefe writes:

Thanks Akkana, I tried that and the same message that my mic cannot be accessed. I changed my input device from internal mic to microphone to no avail. On the web it seems that is a substantial issue. On 3/26/20 6:21 PM, Akkana Peck wrote:

Brian, Sorry to jump in late, but do you have a usb camera? They usually have a mic built in and are easily recognized by your Linux system. I don't have any extras now, just gave away an older Logitech cam. I was glad to share on the meet-up and though tired today, I look forward to our next meeting. I have to study up on remote desktop and ssh use and conventions, etc, so I can bring any questions. None of that is needed for the meet ups. In fact I am using Skype and 'view/share Desktop' to help some others when I cannot understand what they are seeing. It does help to watch as people walk through finding an app, a setting or a file. Better than guessing what is going on over a phone call. Thank you all NMGLugers for questions and answers, Ted P. On Fri, Mar 27, 2020 at 11:42 AM Brian O'Keefe <okeefe@cybermesa.com> wrote:

Thanks Ted. I think that somewhere among all my cords and devices there is an old cam. I'll check that out. I used my phone headset for a Zoom meeting yesterday. This, I believe, is a case of the app Jitsi as there are posts on the web about this exact problem. I have yet to find a solution that isn't so far above my pay grade! I'll delve into it further soon. BTW, no luck with current Firefox as I have no video or controls much less the mic. Many thanks and good for you Ted. Stay sequestered and if you have needs let me know (though there's little one can do these days) On 3/27/20 12:53 PM, Ted Pomeroy wrote:

None of us yesterday had any luck with Jitsi in Firefox anyway. It sorta works, but there are huge delays and bad echoes, and you get a warning when you connect that you'll likely have a bad experience (which was true). It worked pretty well in chromium. ...Akkana
NMGLugers, So, use 'sudo apt install chromium-browser' or your "Software Center" or other gui to add the Chromium Browser for the jitsy sessions. We all noticed a heavy use of CPU and memory during the session with Chromium, so I hope you have at least 4 GB ram or better, 8 GB or more. The Web and web apps have become very demanding. You can still do "rocket science" with less, but video and audio and whatever else is going on in a web conference seems to have heavy requirements. Thank you, Ted P. On the other hand you can jump into IRC using a 20 year old computer! I still use https://irssi.org but there are other options that might be more familiar. Hexchat, Pidgin, Weechat and of course through a browser https://webchat.freenode.net https://freenode.net/kb/answer/chat There are thousands of users and channels to lurk in https://netsplit.de/channels/?net=freenode We are channel #nmglug Jason
Chromium doesn't work with Jitsy, I discovered. Why that should be the case for me is odd but it is what it is. I installed Chrome and found that Jitsy works fine both audio and video. Doesn't take much memory either and no latency issues. If someone wants to send me an invite and using chrome I could verify that. Many thanks and stay safe! NMGLugers, OK. Thank you Mark, Brian and Jason. Mark, I will try jitsy and see what I can do with the people I work with. I hope they are as bright as your students. Sharing the screen may be enough. Also glad to be moving myself and other to the free alternatives. I confess some lapses in "thinking free." Brian, I'm doing okay with recent treatment completed and now just have to obey current rules of isolation with a bit of extra caution. Jason, will the jitsy link be where to meet up at 5:30? I will give that a try. Thank you all for the guidance and feedback. Yeah NMGLUG! Ted P. On Thu, Mar 26, 2020 at 2:55 PM jason schaefer <js@jasonschaefer.com> wrote:
