Hi, I had been recommended to ask this list for advice. but perhaps i didn't explain it properly. I have android phone (flashed not rooted, samsung mega) and an android tablet (rca) I would like to know IF anyone is familiar with rooting these so i can get google out of my phones, and use another 'market' for my apps. I've used a fabulous market once on a unlocked phone from china but it was gsm and would not work where i live in the sticks so i had to go back to cdma network. IS there anyone out there who has the knowhow to do this for me and if so could you contact me directly? Of course, i'm not asking this to be done for free. if that is allowed that be great. I live 45 min from town so im never there in the evenings but i would bring it to town if someone could help me 'lobodomize' them. I also need to upgrade my linux mint to a more recent version I"m told. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a Million! Jena 501 -8083 -- Securely sent from Linux Mint OS ----
I strongly recommend f-droid.org. They have a marketplace that adheres to the FOSS ethos. That's a pretty simple solution, if you just want to ditch the google play store. If you want to flash a custom rom/recovery, xdadevelopers is the go-to for active communities for most devices. I'd be happy to help, but I'm in abq. If you send me make/model/sw versions, I could find appropriate resources. -----Original Message----- From: "Info" <clacc@phreego.com> Sent: 12/9/2015 10:50 AM To: "nmglug@lists.nmglug.org" <nmglug@lists.nmglug.org> Subject: [nmglug] another try android rooting Hi, I had been recommended to ask this list for advice. but perhaps i didn't explain it properly. Rooting Android devices generally means finding someone who's found an exploit that bypasses security on your specific phone/tablet model. Sometimes just knowing the model isn't enough, e.g. root exploits for the Galaxy S4 may or may not work depending on what carrier your phone was designed for (even if it's unlocked). Assuming there is a root exploit for your phone and tablet, you will probably have to download an app from some dodgy download site and run it, hoping it's what it claims to be and that it works on your model, android version and carrier. It's sad this is so difficult. If the goal is to get Google out of your phones, you could run an open source OS, such as Cyanogen Mod (open-source Android) or the Ubuntu or Firefox phone OSes. But again, your phone model has to be one that's well supported: it takes a lot of resources to reverse-engineer drivers for all the hardware modern phones have, and open source projects typically can only support a few of the most popular models. The best way to have a non-Google non-Apple phone is probably to choose the OS you want to run, research which phones it supports best, then buy that model. ...Akkana
Succinct and to the point; this is very insightful. Regards, Satsangat On Wed, Dec 9, 2015 at 12:36 PM, Akkana Peck <akkana@shallowsky.com> wrote:
