Hi, I'm a non-professional Linux newbie who finds the prospect of making a special trip to Santa Fe to check out nmglug a bit of a stretch. But though I think my needs (and aptitude) are modest, the learning curve is steep. And the seemingly endless online searches leading only to more and more incomprehensible rabbit holes are expensive in terms of time, mental energy and spiritual isolation. So I have a couple of questions that I hope someone associated with nmglug might be willing to give me some perspective on. First, is there an identified group of Albuquerque-based members that might be made known to me with whom I might make contact? Second, is it acceptable for a very peripheral participant/non-participant to occasionally outline problems or specific situations and ask for help here? Thanks for reading, Tom in Albuquerque
To NMGLugers & Co., There used to be an Ubuntu group in Abq. If they remain in existence they might countenance other variants of Linux and any question in the Linux realm. And YES, use this mail to ask any questions, we have seen these over the years and thhis is a good way to draw on those who attend and those who follow the mail. And the latter group is larger than the former. I am a bit surprised there isn't something going on in Abq in the Gnu/Linux side of things. Thank you. Ted P. Thanks for the info, Ted. Yes, it seems a little odd to me too that as large and diverse as Abq is that there is no ongoing OS/Linux group here. Tom On 05/15/2017 07:22 PM, Ted Pomeroy wrote:

I'm a little surprised there's nothing in Los Alamos, either. Some day I'll make it to a Santa Fe meeting, but to be honest I'm never really sure when and where the meetings are -- I sometimes see comments on this list about venue changes that don't seem to match the website, and it's a long drive to be not sure if anyone will be there. But LA does have a relatively new thing: a Coder Dojo for kids. It's been going for about six months now at the makerspace, and we have about nine kids who have earned belts (USB wristbands) so far, with projects covering graphics, music, games, and web pages, in languages that include Python, Arduino/C++, Javascript, and Scratch. A lot of them are coding on Raspberry Pis or Chromebooks, and a few have installed Linux as part of other projects, so there's plenty of Linuxy energy in the room (besides me and my laptop). New participants and mentors are welcome on Tuesday nights, if you ever find yourself up Los Alamos way. https://sites.google.com/view/ladojo/home ...Akkana

Hi Tom, I used to make the SF meetings regularly, but my work schedule has prevented it for the last few months, which I regret, because I had lot of fun and made some good friends through that group. (Hi Ted, how's the x200 been treating you?) I've been talking off-list with someone else who recently wrote in from Albuquerque by the name of Mark. He and I have been tossing around the idea of (re)-forming an ABQ chapter of the NMGLUG. Right now, we're looking around for good venue ideas (the best we've go so far is either Flying Star or one of the UNM libraries). We're also thinking about maybe setting up a dedicated forum and/or a separate mailing list. So maybe if we can get an ABQ group going sometime soon, you'll have a place to ask all of your GNU/Linux-related questions. I'm sure there are others on this list who cannot make it to the SF meetings and who would be interested in another option. Can I see a show of hands? Does anyone have any ideas on the perfect venue? color me interested, - KR Tejeda -- This address is used for list management only.
Thanks for the response, KRT It happens that I used to spend a lot of time in Manzano Mesa Multi Generational Center for the inexpensive gym facilities. There used to be and I believe there still is a pretty nicely appointed computer lab in there, as well as other suitable and spacious meeting rooms. I'm pretty sure reservations can be made there for nominal or non-existent fees. Likely the other community centers around town also offer appropriate facilities, though MMMGC is the only one I have any direct knowledge of as for me it was reasonable to bicycle to. My thoughts on locations... Manzano Mesa would be a great location. It's a very nice facility, close to Central Avenue (public transportation) and I-40. Like Tom, I can bike there easily (and do, often). Has city wifi which in my experience is satisfactory. Quelab might be a good facility (I've never visited). It has poor bus service, though, and I can't bike there easily. At least it's close to the Big I. Membership is $20/mo, looks like. UNM surely has some appropriate facility somewhere. It would be nice to try to attract some students from there; I wasn't aware of any Unix clubs during my time as a student (fairly recently). It has excellent bus service, but people with cars will have a hard time finding parking. Network connectivity for non-students is a problem that would need solving. There are other possibilities in the more startup-y parts downtown, like Fatpipe or the Verge building, maybe... As was said earlier, no location will be perfect for everyone. I have to say I find the Manzano Mesa community center the most attractive. -- Anthony J. Bentley

Well, I suppose I was using a slightly different definition of the word "perfect" than what I might have implied. I was aiming for something closer to definition 1b rather than 1a according to Miriam-Webster. Definition of /perfect/ /1//a/ : being entirely without fault or defect : flawless <https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/flawless> /a /perfect/ diamond// b/ : satisfying all requirements : accurate <https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/accurate> Of /course/ we'll never find the *perfect* venue. That's a philisophical/alchemical journey with no end. I guess I should have said "suitable". Anyway.... I agree with everything Anthony said, although I might not have as much experience with some of the places suggested. All in all, the Manzano Mesa Community Center sounds wonderful. I'm definitely interested to give it a try. Also, I want to apologize for seeming to suggest a split in the community. When I suggested "a forum and/or separate mailing list", I was really just thinking of what resources I had to offer that might get the ABQ group up and running. Obviously, more web infrastructure isn't what's needed. So scrap that, I was just brainstorming for resources, I guess. Ok, maybe we're one step closer to picking a venue. Now, what /days /do most of the ABQ folk on this list have free? I'm leaning towards Sunday afternoons myself, but I'm open to suggestions most days after noon or so (I teach mostly in the mornings this summer). -KR -- This email account is used for list management only.
Unfortunately MMMGC appears to be closed on Sundays. But personally I'd be happy to shoot for any place and time in the Abq region others can agree on. https://www.cabq.gov/seniors/senior-multigenerational-centers/manzano-mesa-m... Hi KR, et al

This is great news! Although, creating a new mailing list and/or website would be unfortunate. Everyone would benefit from more activity and resources on the existing mailing list and the website. It would be a shame to fork those resources. I would be happy to delegate controls as appropriate! We have 19 users on the website (2 users have posted). We have 136 mailing list members (very few of us post). I think it more valuable to stimulate the resources already available rather than start anew. Jason

Hi Jason! Good points, I agree actually. It would be more beneficial to have a subsection of the existing infrastructure dedicated to the ABQ group instead of creating an new isolated group structure. If we can get a regular thing going down here in ABQ, I'll be sure to post the relevant info on the existing nmglug site at some point. - KR -- This address is used for list management only.
KRT & GLugers, My x200 is running well, still shuts down at odd times with cause unknown. I am monitoring temp via 'watch -n 15 sensors' and the fan and temps seem within good operating limits. Since I am not doing any 'mission critical' activities I will live with this and keep monitoring for any pattern. A web search showed some others with this problem with free kernel and this hardware. No definitive answer as far as I saw. Trisquel 7 running nicely and does everything I need so I think I am free from top to bottom. Hope you are well, sorry not to have you up for meetings, but I do understand. It would be tough if the situation were reversed. But if we get to meetings off this list we could meet on an annual basis for a "bash" of some sort. Pun intended. Thank you, Ted P. Ted, that's really strange, I didn't know you were experiencing random shutdowns like that. I must have put together about 8 or so of those x200's, most of them with Trisquel, and I the only time I experienced random shutdowns was with bad memory modules. Have you done a Memtest lately? Just curious.... What kernel is that, by the way? That's still back in the 3.x.x series, isn't it? I'm running Linux-libre 4.4.38 on the same hardware, and I don't see any random shutdowns. I did have that happening on my T400, but in that case it was the bad memory like I mentioned. Anyway, just my $0.02. Good to hear from you. - KR -- This email account is used for list management only.

Perfection might be pretty hard. Quelab (the hackerspace not far from the I-40 Rio crossing, which may be out-of-the-way for some) could be good; each `lab member can bring 7 guests, and a pool could support that membership, or perhaps they might give a special dispensation for the group.
