Compatibility from MS Word 2007 to LibreOffice Writer
Hi NMGLUG folks, How can a file from MS Word 2007 retain formatting while editing in LibreOffice Writer? DETAILS I have a .docx file which is a short book which I wrote in MS Word 2007. Most of the doc is in a 2-column layout. I have a Table of Contents, which uses the "Styles" feature. I opened the file in LibreOffice Writer and saved as .odt. Now, when I update the Table of Contents, I lose some formatting, and it's all a mess. Any ideas? I'm using LibreOffice 5.2.7.2 I found this article https://office-watch.com/2017/libreoffice-5-4-ms-office-document-compatibili... Thoughts? LeRoy, maybe try leaving it in docx format. Try to find some in person help where you are so they can see the issue. I usually tell people to write the text and format after it is all done. I am not familiar with publisher format requirements. Good luck, Ted P. On Wed, Oct 23, 2019, 8:30 PM LeRoy Diener <leroy@choosetherightside.com> wrote:

Maybe save it with a different name in .docx and see if the formatting returns to something closer to the original? On 10/24/19 11:12 AM, Ted Pomeroy wrote:

What editor do you use for RTF? I haven't had much luck even finding decent RTF viewers on Linux, let alone editors. I wrote my last book in Markdown, edited in Emacs and previewed in ReText. Getting from Markdown to docx while preserving formatting and images turned out to be a several-step process, but I only needed that when I was ready to submit a chapter. It was better than trying to write while fighting with LibreOffice, and the resulting DOCX looked nice and apparently worked well enough on the publisher's end. But it sounded like the original poster needed fancier formatting than either Markdown or RTF can offer. Maybe it was even formatting that .ODT doesn't have, which might explain why saving as ODT then reading it back in didn't work. ...Akkana
