It has been a while since I have reached out but the time has come.
Every time I try to update my ubuntu 18.04 machine it gives an error that not enough space to complete updates. Based on the information I could find on the internet it seems like the partition is too small but I have no idea how to fix this. Based on my reading, I think this is complicated by the fact I turned on encryption. It looks like upgrading to 20.04 might help but I think the partition still needs to be enlarged and I am not sure if that is an option during the upgrade.
At any rate, I am hoping someone has some experience/advice to help me sort this out.

I doubt encryption has anything to do with "upgrade space" - I would make sure to run 'apt autoremove' first and make sure all your old kernels are cleared out of /boot - that's the likely culprit. You might need to do this manually if something got hosed ... Also, 'apt install ncdu' and then run 'ncdu' in your root directory.
