I’ve gotten calls in Santa Fe as early as April 15, it seems like there are a few early swarms some years. The fruit trees are blooming weeks earlier than they used to and the fruit tree nectar is the stimulus for brood production. Usually our swarm season is busiest around the first week of May which is not far off, but the climate is changing and the bees may be adjusting their rhythms.

At this time there should be maturing drones and possibly some queen cups under construction if the colony is crowded or honey bound. Are you trying to prevent swarming? Once the queen lays an egg in a queen cup and the bees begin feeding the larva after the egg hatches it is known as a queen cell. If you have multiple queen cells under development this can indicate swarm preparation. If there are many developing queen cells present this is a good time to split the hive. At the very least it’s important to make room for the queen to lay to prevent crowding in the brood nest that can trigger swarming. Add empty frames or top bars to encourage the bees to build more comb instead of focusing on swarming.

Thank you! That makes sense! So either split or give them more room. I have counted 6 queen cells under construction but nothing in there yet. And just split them this weekend making sure there are one day old eggs and ordered a queen for them to speed up the process for the queenless hive. Was that where a beekeeper came on and was spraying the bees with something (hopefully sugar water)? They didn’t show him collecting the bees, so I was curious what he sprayed them with. I would have just dropped into a box and waited for them to all go in. He was kind of a ham afterward and took a bow and threw in a pitch.
